About this exam

  • Since 11 March 2025 this exam is administered as two separately scored portions: NEC Knowledge (59 items, of which 56 are scored, 130 minutes) and Calculations (26 items, of which 24 are scored, 110 minutes). Each portion must be passed with at least 70%.
  • The real exam is open book. The only permitted reference is a soft-bound National Electrical Code; loose-leaf, spiral-bound and ring-bound copies are not allowed in the exam room.
  • TDLR examinations have been referenced to the 2026 NEC since 1 September 2026. Our code questions are referenced to the 2017 NEC, which is the most recent edition published as a citable public document.
